Heavy rain and strong winds are not uncommon occurrences in our local area. The peak strength of these weather disturbances are yet to be felt, but as early as now, you must see to it that your roof can withstand such storms. Local roof service company Fields Roof Service shares some important tips to help strengthen your roof before windstorms hit.
Secure the Shingles
Pay attention to the bottom row of your roof’s shingles because they’re the most vulnerable to high winds. As soon as the wind blows underneath them, expect the rest of the layers to be lifted along with them. Unless your roof is rated to have high wind resistance, you can purchase a tube of roofing cement that you can use to affix the first row of shingles more tightly. Inspect for loose shingles on the rest of your roof and re-adhere them using the roofing cement.
Reinforce Soffits
Soffits are located underneath the eaves where the roof’s edge and your home’s siding meet. It protects the roof’s rafters from the elements, and by keeping moisture away from them, you minimize the chances of them getting damaged by mold. Roof repair pros recommend applying a polyurethane sealant and some stainless steel screws to keep the soffits secured. This way, each part of the soffit is connected, acting as one unit so that no weak part can start a failure.
Strengthen Your New Roof
If you are planning to replace your old roof, you must consider certain components that will help the replacement roof become more stormproof. Galvanized ring-shank nails, for instance, can be used to secure the roof deck to the rafters and are known to have more holding power than smooth nails. Hurricane straps connecting the rafters to the walls provide stability for the entire roofing system. Of course, invest in wind-resistant shingles that come in three classes: D (up to 90 mph winds), G (up to 120 mph winds), and H (up to 150 mph winds).
