Many homeowners hardly give their roofing systems much thought – until a leak appears. As a smart homeowner, you have to be proactive when it comes to your roof, and that means scheduling regular roof inspections to check for current or potential damage. If the roofing technician you hired discovered one or more of the following signs, then your roof is due for a replacement.
1. Sunlight Entering Your Attic
Get up your attic in the morning and look up at the underside of the roof decking. If you see sunlight streaming through, then it’s likely that water or air is infiltrating your roof as well. Inspect for water stains as well, and keep an eye out for any changes after a few days of heavy downpour. If your next inspection revealed more damage, it’s a sign your roof needs replacement.
2. Buckling or Curling Shingles
Shingle damage varies in many ways, but two stand out – cupping and clawing. The former occurs when shingle edges turn upward, while the latter happens when the edges stay flat but the center part of the shingle bulges. It can be dismissed as a mere sign of weathering that only warrants simple repairs, but if the damage occurs on a large section of the roof plane, a complete replacement is imminent.
3. Gutter Debris
In the last few years of the life span, aging asphalt shingles begin to shed the embedded granules. These specks of crushed rock begin to accumulate in the gutters and in your yard. The more granules you see, the sooner you should consider replacing your roof.
